After quite a bit of dialog with Adobe they submitted the problem to their programmers and recognized it as a bug. A bugfix was released and I believe it is working propertly now. I'm lucky that way (finding bugs).

I had been looking how to fix this for months and was pointed to this post on the Adobe forum. I am very grateful but how in the world did you ever figure this out?

Thank you! I had the very same problem, but thanks to your post, it's all right now : ) Sorry to hear it took so long to find a solution, though.

Paul,

Thanks for your response. I believe my problem is the same as the one you have described, with the possible exception that *all* of the images imported from another catalog are perceived by Lightroom as being in portrait mode. It doesn't matter if the images had edits or crops in the external catalog. I am using the current version of Lightroom (3.4.1.)

The workaround you described on 8-14-2010 (select all images, rotate them all 90 degrees, then rotate them all -90 degrees) worked for me and was quick and painless.

MIchael,
I entered another post about 2 weeks after this one with ADOBE's input and a work-around.
<a href="http://paulsumberg.com/2010/08/14/bug-alert-adobe-lightroom-and-work-around/" rel="nofollow">http://paulsumberg.com/2010/08/14/bug-alert-adobe-lightroom-and-work-around/</a>
Since then, they fixed the bug. I don't recall if it was the next immediate release or the one after. I just double checked my latest version 3.4.1 and it filters by aspect ratio as expected.
Maybe you are experiencing a different issue??
Good luck
